I didnât always know you, but Iâve always loved you.
I think Iâve been waiting for someone like you,
And all this time Iâve been loving you from my hopes,
and my dreams.
Two weeks before Thanksgiving, I got a call from my mom. She informed me that she would be volunteering at the soup kitchen on Thanksgiving with Charlie and his mom, Beth. She also told me she thought it would be great if I came home and volunteered with her, but we only got a few days off for Thanksgiving and I didnât have a car to drive home.
âI was actually thinking, maybe I could stay at school this year. I have a lot of work with finals coming up in a few weeks.â
Silence filled the line, but then her words came out rushed and clipped
âOf course. Schoolwork comes first. It wonât be the same without you here though.â
I wished so bad I could stay on the line and gush a little about Wes. I wanted to tell her how he made me melt, how I was falling in love with him. I wanted her to be someone in my life who would care about that, but I knew better than that. That information would only make her upset with me.
I would turn twenty the day after Thanksgiving, and yet I couldnât face her with the truth. Her disapproving nature drove a silent wedge between us and had since I was fourteen when she caught me having my first kiss. He was an older guy from my high school, and her response to finding us kissing behind the shed was enough to make me want to crawl into a hole and hide from the world for a month. My only saving grace was my Aunt Lorna, who was visiting at the time. Lorna was a free spirit. She sent me all the trashy romance novels she had when she was done reading them, which my mom didnât know about. If she did, she probably wouldâve cut off that relationship too. So, needless to say, where my mother failed to understand me, Lorna filled in.
My aunt came into my room that night as I sat on the floor crying, utterly humiliated by the whole situation. She told me my mother loved me in her own way, and I told her that I believed my mother was a psycho who wanted to see me depressed. I was so angry at the way she shamed me for experiencing something so normal. Even then, I knew she would probably never approve of any suitor I chose.
âLarkin, your mom is doing what she believes is right. She doesnât want you to end up married with a baby by twenty like she was. She wants to protect you, and in many ways, honey, she is trying to be your mom and dad. You know your dad would probably beat off any boy who came within ten yards of you!â
We both laughed; fresh tears stung my eyes at that moment, but for different reasons.
